The 4th in Suburbia

Had quite a different 4th than I’m used to. Not that I really have any traditions, but the whole homeless thing has thrown a loop into any routine I have, including holidays. Last year at the house i’m currenly sitting there was a really nice illegal show in the neighborhood that I could see from the back yard. This year, not so much, so I went about my normal Wednesday night business, putting out the garbage and recycle and stuff like that. Well, I’m on a cul-de-sac and the neighbors were having a little show out front of the house. I put the garbage and my ears perked up about some talk about a housesitter, etc etc. Well, I was about to go back in, and I got the big invite… come over, come over! Well, I have to give the suburbanites a little credit. Nice people. The 2 G&Ts I’d had earlier helped loosen me up I have to say, but all and all, I hung out with a bunch of Lake Oswegans on a cul-de-sac for the fourth, and I had a pretty good time. They even did a few illegal shoot em up in the airs later, so that was a real bonus. I’ll be back in this nighborhood in a few weeks and it’s seeming a little more appealing now.

Kickball update Vol. 3

Just a quick note to let you know that a ball did actually fly at my head, and make contact no less, and I still kept playing. We were practicing a quick catch a release exercise with 2 balls, I bent down to catch one ball that was flying low, and the other was thrown at me too, only to hit me right on top of my head. We all know I hve a well established rule about sports that involve balls flying at my head, but I’ve been waiving that rule as of late. What a champion!

Kickball update- game 2

Had another game last night.  Lost again 6 - 0.  We see this as an improvement for our defense, since we held them to 6 runs rather than 10.  Guess we need to work on the offense, though.  I did my part.  Made it on base twice.  Made it to second both times.  I’ve been given the nickname of “infield broadcast” because of my little habit of constantly yelling about what’s going on in the game while I’m out in the field.  This name, of course, was instanly shortened to “Broad”

That’s right, Purple Sequin has joined a kickball team.  I’ve had one game, one injury, and one hell of a good time already.  You all know PS’s rules about balls flying towards my head, but for this I’ve made an exception.  A few pics from the first game:

PS running to first base after a successful kick:

PS on first base.  Superstar!!

We need as much support as we can get (lost the first game 3 to 10) so here’s our schedule (Our team is Midnight Thunder).  Come out and cheer us on!

Do you think that if you drink a coffee really fast it will have more of an effect on you the way alcohol does?  If so, how would one go about shot-gunning a cup of joe?  I get this picture of tipping up a starbucks cup and then punching a hole in the bottom with one of those little wood stir sticks and just chugging away.

We found out today that there is a homeless lady living at the school.  No one knows for sure how long she’s been living here, but it seems that she knows her way around pretty well, so my guess is she’s been here for a while.  Lisa thinks she’s been living here for a year and has just gotten lazy and finally got caught.  Anyway, she tried to cover up and say she was a prospective students (she looks like she’s around 20 or so).  I didn’t get a good look at her but from what I’ve heard she had a ton of glitter on her face and was carrying a bag with a bunch of Jesus faces on it.  Seems like a pretty cool chick.  I”m kinda sad they’re kicking her out, actually.

Last night Carrie and I went to see a ballet up in Vancouver.  It was a really good show.  Well we were going to meet some people after for my friend Linsay’s birthday.  We needed to make a few stops first.  We needed cash, and we were kinda hungry so we thougth a BK milk shake would be pretty good.  Not finding anything on the washington side, we headed across the bridge and then down into Jantzen beach because we should have been able to find both a BK and a bank down there.  Well, Carrie and I both are not known for our navigational skills but we were trying.  We spotted the Burger King sign and headed for it.  After a few illigal turns turns (one in front of a cop) and after backing up once, the restaurant was in view.  I’m looking hard to the left to see the entrance, and Carrie just says “uhh, stef??” and that’s when I go back to looking straight ahead and we both realize that I am not on the way to that BK, but actually on the on ramp to get back onto 5 North.  Woo hoo!  we’re  back on the bridge again.  Laughing histarically at this point, we call Liz to tell here we’re going to be late.  I decide to take the first exit to get us turned around again.  Another mistake.  If you know anything about Washington State geography- which we don’t- you now that the first exit on the WA side is SR 14, a highway.  Ok, so now we’re headed to Camas, when we should be downtown by then.  Luckily I’m not shy to do something illegal.  Another clever turn, and we were headed back West, then down I-5.  Taking a change at it again, we did make that turn into the burger king, which also happened to be next to a bank.  Lucky!  Anyway, Carrie and I always joke about how bad we are together in that car, but that’s about as bad is it gets.  It was fun to go to washington, but once in one day is fine with me!

Stef has entered the world of MySpace.  Yes, I finally broke down and did it, and ya know what?? it’s been fun.  Here’s the web address for my page.

It’s marked public now, but I’ll change if I get harassed.  Anyway, enjoy, and check back often, as I will probably be changing it quite a bit at first.

Sick of being sick

I’m not one to get sick often.  Consequently I’m not one to complain about being sick often.  but I’m going to throw out a little wwwwhhhhiiiinnnee.  I’m tired of being sick!  Ok, I got strep last Monday, which is why y’all didn’t hear from me much.  I went on the antibiotics, felt better, went out, lost my voice, felt better in the morning, went out again, really lost my voice….  now it’s still gone.  A few people find it sexy, but for the most part people just want to stay away from me.  Anyway, because I can’t cease to speak, the rhaspy voice wears on.  Just a warning in case you call me and think James Earl Jones has stolen my phone.

Monday night I happened to come across a PBS documentary on Mormons. I’m not particulary fond of orginized religion, but I do like religious people, and having “grown up” with a Mormon family, I’ve always had a special place in my heart for the Mormon people. the show was really intersting. I always figured I knew a thing or two about the history and culture having attended quite a few regular sunday services, classes, and even a baptism. But it turns out I knew nothing. And apparently, neither did anyone else. Throughout the day on Tuesday I noticed just about everyone I knew at work talking about how they had watched the show and how fascinating it was. Turns out everyone watched it. I watched the first one, and Tivo’d the second part. If anyone’s interested, I’ll save my recording. Of course, that means you have to come visit me… and you may get some food out of it too. Mmmm… mormons….

The Governor’s here

Teddy will be here speaking this afternoon.  There has been quite a lot of prep going in to his visit.  This is mostly due to the fact that yesterday was “dean for a day” which is a traditon our school has that the students take over the school for the day.  They don’t really take over the school per se, it’s more like they just get really drunk, have a barbeque, and sometimes break stuff.  Well the breaking stuff has what’s caused all the prep for the governor.  The most damage was the outside area where he is scheduled to speak was completely covered in sidewalk chalk, which caused a need for a great amount of power washing.  Anyway, now that the school is cleaned up, we’re rolling out the luxury.  the great debate is whether or not he will actually participate the the reception we’re having becuase of his recent media stunt.  I say stick to your guns, Teddy, and put down that cookie.

Current legislation

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

In an effort to quell the conservative agenda of systematic discrimination against our fellow humans, Democrats in Salem have introduced 2 bills to give homosexual individuals “more equal” rights in this state.  While I applaud the effort, my emotions are stymied by some of the detials in these laws.  One bill allows for gay couples to enter into a legal domestice partnership.  Nice idea, if you like the 1896 idea of saying that seperate but equal is truly equal.  Sorry folks, those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it.  The second bill bans descrimination based on sexual orientation.  This bill is great, except that it includes a gaping exception.  It allows religious orgainzations to legally discriminate against poeple based on their orientation, an exception that I find unacceptable.  The primary reason that representatives of these organizations have given that sexual orientation should not be protected is because it is a behavior, and many also argue, a chosen one at that.  They believe that any sort of behavior can not rightfully be protected.  So to that I ask, is RELIGION, not in itself a BEHAVIOR, and a CHOSEN one at that?!?!  So why then, are you asking us to protect you against discrimination for your religion (as I side note, I am certanly not arguing against this protection) while you can continue to descimnate against another protected group.  Would it not be necessary then, for the bill to include an exception for gay and lesbian groups to be accepted from the protections given to people based on religion?  I beleive in protecting all people against descrimination, but not protecting people’s “right” to descriminate.

(Sending this to Teddy, btw)

First sign of sun

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

Last Friday was a beautiful day.  I decided to enjoy the sun and get outside for lunch.  it is always on this first sunny day that I remember exactly why I don’t like eating outside.  It’s just plain awkward.  The smallest of wind gusts sends all of my food flying and my hair into my food.  There’s no real comfortable place to sit: a few dirty picnic tables or cement steps.  Reading and eating is impossible.  So I decided to do what I did every day last summer- eat inside then read outside.  It’s a nice arrangement allowing me to get some food, and some sun.

Although now I’m writing this on the gloomiest of days, and I’m wishing I could be out in the sun, even with my hair in my food!
